Lecture by Ihor Kocherhin: "How Industrialization Changed the Identity of the Ukrainian South"

How did factories shape the new urban identity of Dnipro and other cities?

How did industrialization influence the leisure, traditions, and holiday calendar of city residents? In what ways did European entrepreneurs change the Ukrainian south, and can this process be called colonization? Is Dnipro truly a city formed primarily by industry?

We will reflect on these questions during a lecture by historian Ihor Kocherhin on August 28 at 18:00.

In particular, we will discuss the first and second waves of industrialization, the discovery and development of deposits, the growth of the coal and metallurgical industries, population migration to the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, as well as the figures and processes that influenced the formation of Dnipro's industrial image.

Ihor Kocherhin is a Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, Professor at the Department of Social and Humanitarian Disciplines of the Military Institute of Tank Troops of NTU "KhPI", and an officer of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He is a researcher of Oleksandr Pol. His research interests include the history of the South of Ukraine, genealogy, military leadership, and local history.
