Lecture “Dmytro Yavornytsky: Life, Cultural Mission, Legacy”

On July 8 at 18:30, as part of the "Dnipro and Its Surroundings" program, we will talk with historian Maksym Kavun about Dmytro Yavornytsky — archaeologist, ethnographer, founder of the Historical Museum in Dnipro, and a prominent researcher of Cossack history and the Dnipro Rapids.

During the lecture “Dmytro Yavornytsky: Life, Cultural Mission, Legacy”, we will explore the following topics:

  • how the historian lived and worked during the imperial and Soviet periods, the accusations of “Ukrainophilia” he faced, and why he sometimes had to shift his rhetoric;

  • Yavornytsky’s contribution to the study of Cossack history and the Dnipro Rapids;

  • Yavornytsky as a cultural moderator: the founding of the Historical Museum in Katerynoslav and his curatorship of the Cossack heritage collection;

  • how the historian cultivated Ukrainian identity in Dnipro through the creation of the Cossack myth and the reinterpretation of the imperial past;

  • the legacy Yavornytsky left behind and how we view his role in the city’s history today.

Maksym Kavun is a historian, cultural scholar, and urbanist. He holds a PhD in History and heads a department at the Dmytro Yavornytsky National Historical Museum in Dnipro. He is a member of the National Union of Local Historians of Ukraine, and the author or co-author of over 40 books and 800 articles. His research interests include historical urbanism, local history, cultural studies, intellectual history, historical regionalism, historical toponymy, the history of southern Ukraine, and the history of Dnipro.

Free entry with registration.

The lecture series "Dnipro and Its Surroundings" was created in cooperation with POMIZH, a media outlet about Dnipro and its surroundings.
