Screening of the movie "Decay"

On April 23, at 18:30, the DCCC cinema will host a screening of the film "Decay" by Mykhailo Belikov.

This is the first feature film about the Chernobyl disaster, filmed during the era of "glasnost" and "perestroika" — a period when censorship had weakened, but the state continued to fund cinematic projects.

On the eve of the Chernobyl accident, journalist Oleksandr Zhuravlyov returns home to his family in his native Kyiv. However, by tomorrow, history will once again be divided into "before" and "after" the catastrophe. The scale and details of the accident are carefully suppressed. Nevertheless, Oleksandr does not give up and attempts to uncover the mystery.

Zhuravlyov is a symptom of his historical late-Soviet context, driven by the discourse of truth and the search for facts. Later, post-accident heroism would give way to national sacrifice.

The film's metaphors are largely political. The movie tells the story not so much of the "decay" of radioactive substances, but of the erosion of human relationships and the collapse of a cynical state apparatus. Ultimately, Chernobyl became not only a symbol of the inefficiency of Soviet socialist rule but also a key element of collective memory and the national history of independent Ukraine — one of the fundamental aspects of Ukrainian identity.
