Screening of the movie "Fuchzhou"

Dnipro-region towns and villages in Ukraine, the Florida coast, and the Bermuda Triangle serve as the settings for Mykhailo Illienko’s film Fuchzhou.

We will screen this film on August 27 at 18:30 in the DCCC cinema.

Orest, a descendant of Ukrainians who once emigrated across the ocean, is swept into a Ukrainian village by a fierce storm of nature. In truth, this element is history itself, which scattered Ukrainians across the globe. Through dangerous, amusing, and absurd adventures rendered in the poetic cinema tradition, the filmmakers reunite the protagonist with his beloved, Kateryna.

The events of Fuchzhou unfold at the beginning of the 20th century, though the temporal and spatial coordinates are fairly arbitrary. The film itself consists of two parts.

In the first, "Ukrainian" part, Mykhailo Illienko weaves Ukrainian folklore and demonology together with fantasy elements and irony. The second part, which could be called "American," parodies popular genres—Spaghetti Westerns and adventure films.
