Screening of the movie "Wild Love"
On May 14 at 18:30, the DCCC cinema will host a screening of "Wild Love", directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Villen Novak.
It is a love story set against the backdrop of the early years of independence—a time of free markets, freedom from censorship, open borders, nudity, and "corporate pioneers." At the same time, it is an extraordinary portrait of the Ukrainian capital, where numerous Kyiv streets and districts are easily recognizable: from Livoberezhna to the Podil slopes, Hidropark, and Boryspil Airport.
All of this turns the film into a unique document of its era, and its narrative into a quintessential story of the 90s, where parallels with the present are easily found. At the center of the film are two lovers: Masha, a girl from a boarding school, and Maksym, a boy from a so-called "well-to-do" family. Their story could have ended in an expected marriage, but Susan, an American searching for her roots, arrives in Kyiv. The romantic line turns into a dramatic triangle.
"Wild Love" became the box office leader of 1994. Three years later, Novak would film another hit, becoming perhaps the most successful Ukrainian director of the decade.
A Ukrainian-language digital copy of the film was created for the first time in 2025 through the scanning of a 35mm positive by the Dovzhenko Centre Film Lab.
