Songlines of Ukraine Music Event

On 20 September at 17:00, DCCC will host a music event of the project Songlines of Ukraine.

Songlines of Ukraine is a project dedicated to researching and documenting the traditional musical practices of the national communities of Budzhak (part of Bessarabia), initiated by the NGO Kultura Medialna together with the German platform Freihandelszone.

The project is inspired by the Australian legend of Songlines — the singing tracks laid down by ancestors in the time of creation. These songs became invisible roads — meridians that allow people to navigate space and memory. The Ukrainian land also resonates with thousands of voices — in different languages and rhythms — preserving cultural identity.

As part of the project, two expeditions to Bessarabian villages took place, where the Kultura Medialna team, together with singer and folklore researcher Mariana Sadovska and Budzhak music heritage researcher Artem Tselikov, recorded the music of various national communities, including Albanians, Bulgarians, Gagauz, Moldovans, Romanians, and Roma.

This project is about encounters and exchange: of thoughts, heritage, songs, and traditions. The outcomes of Songlines of Ukraine will be presented in Dnipro and Cologne.

Next Saturday at DCCC, the project team will share their experiences from the expeditions and immerse the audience in the soundscapes of their journey across southern Ukraine. The music event will feature an interactive sound installation by sound artist Marko Medvediev, video documentation of the expeditions by Olena Misiura, and performances by Mariana Sadovska together with musicians from Budzhak.
