The exhibition "Hands Reaching for Figs"
The exhibition "Hands Reaching for Figs" by Eliza and Heorhii Mamardashvili is on view at the Artsvit Gallery until April 3, 2027.
The exhibition is a continuation of Eliza and Heorhii’s performative practice built around distance as a condition of closeness. At the center of the project is what happens to experience in the process of its transmission: what can be conveyed, and what remains unspoken and untranslatable.
The exposition brings together drawings, texts, photographs, fabrics, maps, as well as passed on and found objects that over six years have become part of the father and daughter’s shared practice.
One of the earliest forms of their co-creation was the exchange of materials. Eliza sent Heorhii handmade paper, fabric, and gessoed wooden boards, which returned transformed — bearing drawings, place names, and letters. Intimacy here is not a state, but an act — realized through conversations, drawings, waiting, and returning.
Following the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, distance took on a different weight. Heorhii continues to live in frontline Zaporizhzhia, while Eliza relocated from Kharkiv to Lviv. Their shared practice reveals how war interferes with already formed human bonds and alters the conditions of their continuation.
Eliza Mamardashvili is a Ukrainian artist of Georgian descent. Her practice focuses on the continuity of memory, family ties, intimacy, and distance.
Heorhii Mamardashvili is a prosthodontist (dentist). For the past six years, together with his daughter, he has been working on the project "Hands Reaching for Figs".
